I meant to post this a few days ago when it actually happened...

Lateish on Saturday (I guess it must have been 9:30 or 10) Robin was sorting things out just outside the back door. He's been digging up drains and such. All of a sudden I could see this small animal skittering along by the fence. My first thought given the drain situation was "rat". And then we realised it wasn't a rat at all but a hedgehog. So I've now seen my first live wild hedgehog. It skittered off into the rhubarb patch and vanished.

Awww, I love hedgehogs. I can't believe you've never seen one before! If you put down cat or dog food and fresh water they will come into your garden. Don't feed them milk, they don't digest it very well.

I've seen hedgehogs before I just hadn't seen a properly wild one other than squished on the road.

Given we have a "free-range" cat I'm always wary of putting out food for wild-life as I'd hate for the cat to kill things we have deliberately attracted to the garden.

I didn't put that very well, I meant I was surprised you hadn't seen one in your garden before :-)

I think any cat that would take on a hedgehog would be a very silly cat ;-)
