Just a drive by posting to show I do still exist!
thealmondtree: (Morris)
For those who thought I'd vanished, I am still here. Just rather more than usually in observer mode. Have also now got a dreamwidth account with the obvious name which is just as busy as this account!

OK so I'm even worse at using this journal than using my LJ one!

Detachment

I think part of the difficulty in posting anything is a feeling of detachment, non-connection, almost unrealness, of watching the world go by in a lonely way.

Sitting on my kitchen window sill is a vase with a bunch of carnations and roses given to me this morning at toddler group by a female friend whose youngest started full-time school yesterday, "just because".

Well I imagine I'll be just as bad about putting anything on this account as I am about my LJ one!

However, everyone else seems to be joining up here so I thought I should so I can keep up with others.

How to cope with toddler when feeling very yucky with head cold - plunk them infront of Playschool - and then have to cope when they decide to use an empty soft drink bottle as a drum stick on the desk!

Ice

Oh how I wish I'd had my camera and hadn't been running late when I walked out the front door this evening to see the cat standing in the middle of the pond ... walking across it on the ice.

Snow

Unlike large parts of southern England we got only a small amount of snow. Really it's just at the annoying level - there isn't enough to even be properly pretty and there certainly isn't enough to help T build a snow man.

So here are a few photos of our garden today.

The front garden about 9am

The back garden this afternoon about 4pm

And the back footpath about 4pm

So this evening has been filled by an on the spot decision to go to IKEA basked on the fact that T demonstrated his ability to open the safety gates that we have that are not from IKEA. We now have two more IKEA gates, a storage unit for the kitchen for T's toys and some new bedding for T - part of the plan to move him out of the cot and into his own room. And R drove and we had dinner in their restaurant so I didn't have to think what to cook.

In other news R still doesn't have a job. There seems to be a fair bit of contract stuff around and he is working pretty hard at this hunting lark. Unfortunately most of what's around will mean weekly commutes which is non-ideal but pretty well anything is better than no job.

Having had a "real" Christmas tree again this year we took it across to Hinchingbrooke Park this afternoon to use their Christmas tree chipping service. Exchanged one used Christmas tree for two rubble sacks of pine tree chippings for use round the garden.

We also took Theo for a decent walk round the pond which was frozen over and you could see in a few places that the ice was about an inch thick. It's warmed up somewhat today so the ground was very mushy but the mush was cearly on a bed of ice!

When we got back to the cafe and visitor centre we noticed that there was something to go and look at in the visitor centre so mooched down and found a small collection of stalls connected with "greener living". One of them was Nene River Organics. They do organic veg boxes but the last time I checked out their website they didn't deliver here (despite my regularly seeing one of their vans parked up locally). Turns out they now do deliver in this area so we'll consider that.

As we were about to go we scored a bonus. We were chatting to the ladies on the Nene River stall and they suddenly asked if we'd like to take a small veg box. It has been on display all weekend and would be given away to someone as they couldn't sell it - they said that they almost always forgot when there was a show coming up and got their own in and then ended up giving stuff to neighbours. When we accepted they then offered us some of the fruit from their display. We now have the contents of the box: valor potatoes, carrots, onions, green cabbage, red russian kale/cavolo nero and leeks (all UK origin) and sweet potatoes (ES) and butternut squash (ES/IT). And then we also have mushrooms, 1 large beetroot, 1 avacado, 1 mango, 1 grapefuit, red onions, 4 apples, large piece fresh ginger (which they tell me I can freeze and just grate straight from the freezer), garlic and a good sized bag of jerusalem artichokes. All for free!

I think we need to do some serious veg eating!

And tomorrow R has a job interview (although we think the location is going to rule it out).

Pay It Forward: I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment here on my LJ. The gift could be anything, but you will receive it within 365 days (possibly sooner). The only thing you have to do in return is "pay it forward" by making a similar agreement on your livejournal.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Small Son: "Mummy, tree stars"

Small son being shown the lights on the Christmas Tree in an otherwise dark room.

Watching small son pat the cat and watching her tolerate his exuberance!

The observant will notice there was no day 5. Friday was a "not good day".

So picking up on Saturday: A wonderful girly evening with two friends watching Sex and the City and eating popcorn.

Yummy food and good conversation.

The exuberance of 15 Guides singing carols on a cold and drafty railway station.

The sheer delight of a toddler watching trains come and go.

Friends who love to help out with my toddler.

DH being able to spend some time with said toddler in between job hunting.

Watching my small son play "this little pig went to market" on his dad's toes and when it comes to "this little pig went wee, wee, wee all the way home" trying to tickle himself!

I'm thankful for friends who care.
